Acrylic vs. Glass: Why Acrylic Products may be Superior to Glass Products
What should I buy – glass products or acrylic products? Will I be better off with acrylic products? Or should I not stray from the traditional glass products? These are some questions people ask when designing their homes –a valid question, as it is always important to get the best products for your home decors. If you, for any reason, are asking the questions posted above, or are simply curious about which is the better product, expect this article to enlighten you.
Before that, let us first answer the question: what exactly are acrylic products? Acrylic, in its most easily understandable definition, is a type of clear plastic that resembles glass in many ways. As such, it is always compared to glass. However, they differ in different aspects. While for some, acrylic should be a superior material, others would prefer glass over acrylic products. Since it is imperative that you are able to make your own decision regarding the matter, let's go over the basic differences between glass and acrylic.
- Acrylic is more durable compared to glass. As we all know, glass products easily break and shatter. The same does not hold true for acrylic. It requires way greater amount of force foracrylic to break. In this department, acrylic maybe better than glass. For example, if you are raising kids, having acrylic products may be a good investment. Accidents caused by clumsy growing kids will not easily destroy your acrylic material.
- However, acrylic products are more vulnerable to scratches compared to glass products. If you are all for aesthetics, this is one aspect in which acrylic is a poorer choice. Glass products are difficult to scratch. It takes a deeper scratch for it to show in glass. On the other hand, a slight scratch can be visible already with acrylics. However, it is easier to remove scratches from acrylics than it is from glasses.
- Acrylic products are stronger that glass products. In relation to its durability, an acrylic, compared to a glass of the same volume, can handle more weight. As such, less material is required for an acrylic product to be made. Maybe this is why acrylic products are generally lighter than glass.
- Acrylic products are clearer than glass products. Ever noticed how super clear glass products have shades of green? Glasses are really like this and you cannot get them perfectly clear. Acrylic is said to be clearer and more transparent than glass, making it superior to glass in this aspect.
- For all the said advantages, it is no surprise that acrylic is more expensive than glass. This is the only prominent disadvantage of using an acrylic product. Even so, almost all good things come pricey. As such, this should be expected from acrylic products. However, with the advantages discussed, the price difference should be insignificant.
Seemingly, from the discussion above, acrylic products are superior to glass products.
